June 9-10
Location: We’ll be holding the tourney at the same sweet fields as last year, at the Shanghai Football and Rugby Club. The Club has been in a continual process of improvement, so expect the amenities to be even nicer than before. A full bar and BBQ are available all day, nice hot showers and bathrooms, pool tables, a trampoline and plenty of tents and seating. Word is there may even be an above ground swimming pool and a Slip N Slide (if we can convince the groundskeepers) in action. Directions and more details can be found here: http://www.
Accommodation: This year teams are welcome to camp on the grass fields at the club for free – showers and bathrooms will be open all night. Just e-mail me if you are planning to do this so I can give the club a rough idea of how many folks are camping. For those who want to stay in a hotel we recommend the Motel 168 very close to the fields – they are running a special of a two-bedroom room for 138 rmb / night (around 20 USD) - but even if you don’t book those rooms in time the price will only rise by a few dollars a night. We will have a bus running from the 168 Motel both days, and if other hotels prove to be popular choices we’ll run buses to those as well. There is an attachment with some possible hotels attached to this e-mail. Any questions please e-mail me – and if you’d like us to make reservations for you or your team, let me know.
Tourney Format: Same as last year we will have an A, B and C division. On Saturday the games will be a round robin within your division; on Sunday morning crossovers will be held between the divisions, with the possibility of teams moving up or down. Then we’ll have a championship bracket, with medals awarded to the winners of each division. The winner of the A division will be crowned tourney champions and have their name emblazoned on the Little Buddha championship trophy for all eternity. Beijing won it last year – can they do it again?
Tourney Theme and Party: Keeping with our longstanding ‘Emperor’ theme the tourney’s name is ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’. Those with a knowledge of European folktales should see where we’re going with this. To make it more obvious the theme of our Saturday night party is ‘Anything But Clothes’. Get creative. Regarding the party this year we’re going to do things a bit differently. The plan is as follows:
- Saturday we hold round-robin games until 4 or so. Then we host a BBQ dinner on the fields.
- Some live music, some drinking games (drinkball / flipcup, etc), with prizes for the winners to go along with the glory. Folks who want to retire to their hotel rooms to relax for a few hours and get ready can do so. Others can stick around and use the facilities at the club.
- When night falls we transition to party mode. DJ and speakers and lights. More drinkies. Party party. Remember the theme, and that we will be all on our own way out there at the club. What happens in Pudong stays in Pudong. Stumble back to your tent when you’re ready to collapse, or take the tourney bus back to your hotel.
- All players will get drink tickets to be cashed in for free drinks.
Tourney Website: Details and maps will soon be up at http://shanghaiultimate.com/
Tourney Cost and What You Get: Same as last year the tourney fee for Shanghai is 500 rmb. That gets you top level frisbee for two days on fantastic fields, a frisbee, catered BBQ lunch for both days, a dinner on Saturday night at the fields and free-flow beers during the daytime.
